More about UTM parameters
UTM parameters are tags you can add to your URLs to track your marketing campaign's performance. These parameters help you identify where your traffic is coming from and how different promotions work. Here’s a quick guide to the 5 main UTM parameters:
- utm_source:
Shows where the traffic is coming from. For example, `utm_source=facebook` indicates that the visitors found you through Facebook. - utm_medium:
Describes the marketing channel used. For instance, `utm_medium=email` tells you that the traffic came from an email campaign. - utm_campaign:
Identifies the specific campaign or promotion. For example, `utm_campaign=summer_courses` helps track traffic from a summer course promotion. - utm_term:
(Optional) Used to track specific keywords in paid search ads. For example, `utm_term=online_marketing` can help you see which search terms are bringing visitors to your site. - utm_content:
(Optional) Differentiates between different versions of an offer, ad or link. For example, `utm_content=banner_ad1` can help you track which ad version is performing better.
Here’s an example of a URL with UTM parameters (UTM parameters in Bold):
https://www.yourcoursewebsite.com/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=fall_webinar&utm_content=cta_button
When someone clicks on this URL, the UTM parameters are captured by your analytics tools, such as Google Analytics. This lets you see which marketing efforts are driving the most traffic to your courses and helps you make data-driven decisions to improve your promotional strategies.
